We develop a simple two country model of international trade that assumes that there is a fixed cost associated with transporting goods across national boundaries. We show that this leads to multiple equilibria that can be Pareto-ranked. One of these equilibria is autarky. We argue that the existence of fixed costs in transport can help explain the low volume of North-South trade. ∗GREQAM, Univ...

Both alcohol use and stress appear to increase blood pressure. In addition, stress is associated with increased alcohol use. The results support a causal relationship between stress and alcohol use and point ...
متن کاملSyphilis in remote north Queensland.
The notification rate for infectious syphilis (i.e. infection of less than 2 years duration) in Queensland has remained fairly static over the last 5 years but the pattern of infection appears to be changing (Figure 1). Between 2001 and 2005, the non-Indigenous rate climbed from 1.1 to 2.0 cases per 100,000 population, while the rate in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population acros...

In 2002 three separate outbreaks of dengue were detected in north Queensland, including the first documented outbreak of dengue 4 in Australia. Molecular analyses identified Thailand and Indonesia as the likely origin of two of the outbreaks. Investigations during 2002 also included a suspected dengue outbreak in the Torres Strait which proved to be a false alarm, and a number of imported cases...
